Bolt Action Rifles

The bolt action is undeniably king when it comes to custom rifles. It's safe to say that more custom rifles are built on bolt actions than all other types combined. There are a plethora of makers and bolt actions to choose from. Rugers, Remingtons, Weatherbys and others all have their adherents, but the Winchester M-70, and the Mauser M-98 still are considered the sine qua non when it comes to custom rifles.

Any discussion of custom rifles must begin with the Mauser M-98 which is as modern today as it was more than 100 years ago when it was first produced. It's design features have been copied by every bolt action ever made, with many of the copies never measuring up to the original. It's controlled feed mechanism is still considered the standard of the industry. Depending on where and when they were made the action is more than strong enough for all standard factory cartridges. The Mauser's few faults are due to its design as a military weapon. Because of this cosmetic changes are necessary to create a true custom rifle.

The Winchester M-70, and especially the pre 64 model are held in high esteem by connoisseurs of fine rifles. It's three position safety mechanism is considered the best ever produced, and is copied more and more by other manufacturers. It's trigger is simplicity itself. And the controlled feed mechanism is considered by some to be essential. It is beautiful to look at, operates smoothly, and is absolutely reliable. It is considered the utmost refinement of the Mauser action.

It is the first choice of many wanting custom rifles.
